OK,
so I didn't exactly reach deep into the filmography for
this one, but ERIN BROCKOVICH is certainly worth a second
look as the awards season begins. Much of the media's
focus is currently on TRAFFIC, so it's kind of easy to
forget that Universal Pictures tucked this one in, all
the way back in March. However, as the critics' awards
are released, Soderbergh is being recognized for BROCKOVICH
as well as TRAFFIC. Critics haven't forgotten about Julia
Roberts either, as she's received several Best Actress
awards for her performance in the film. What's nice about
this film is how accessible it is. If you've never seen
a Steven Soderbergh film, but you would like to, this
film is a great place to start. And if you are a big Soderbergh
groupie (meaning your videotape of SCHIZOPOLIS is worn
out from repeated viewings and you stole your copy of
KING OF THE HILL from your local Blockbuster), you can
relish Soderbergh's ability to turn a possibly ordinary
(boring?) film into quality cinema. |
