The 58th Annual Golden Globe Awards are over and done with and Steven Soderbergh went home empty handed. There had been a great deal of talk about how he may split his votes (he was nominated for both TRAFFIC and ERIN BROCKOVICH for Best Director). CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON director Ang Lee was awarded the prize.
Both TRAFFIC and ERIN BROCKOVICH also failed to win the Best Dramatic Picture Prize. Ridley Scott's epic GLADIATOR took home the honors.
TRAFFIC and ERIN BROCKOVICH did pick up a few honors. Julia Roberts won the Best Actress prize for her performance. TRAFFIC won two awards with Benicio Del Toro winning the very first award of the evening—the Best Supporting Actor award for his role as Javier Rodriguez. Screenwriter Steven Gaghan also won the Best Screenplay Award.
Catherine Zeta-Jones lost out to Kate Hudson (ALMOST FAMOUS) in the Best Supporting Actor and Albert Finney lost out to Benicio Del Toro in the Supporting Actor category.
Although Steven Soderbergh didn't win any awards, he certainly did pick up his share of praise. Del Toro thanked Soderbergh "for listening" during his acceptance speech and Julia Roberts explained "that Steven just told me what to do, and I tried to do it." Steven Gaghan also thanked the director for giving him the chance to write the script. Even presenters George Clooney and Erin Brockovich (the real one) gave their respects to Soderbergh. OCEAN'S 11 was the talk of the night amongst press, as they seemed more interested in the star-packed film than the awards at hand.
